Oh... give Life of Pi a try (this summer, when you're away from the delinquents)
One of the things I liked about the ending is that you don't really know what happens. I mean, you know he lives, because he's telling the story, but beyond that which version is the truth is sort of up for grabs. It's extremely well-written, I thought, and really a fascinating study either way.
